Create A Pattern Tile
Using Photoshop

Try your hand at creating a Pattern Tile using 'Simple Filters'. This plugin has 10 different easy to use filters. You can download these free filters at:

http://www.btinternet.com/~cateran/simple/

Filters include: Quick Tile, Half Wrap, Top Left Mirror, Centre Tile, Zoom Out and Flip, Blintz, Diamond, Horizontal Grain, Pizza Slice Mirror, Four Way Average. You can also find 2 bonus free filters: Horizontal Half Wrap and the Vertical Half Wrap along with installation instructions.


  1. With Photoshop open, start a new image
    1. set the Width and Height to: 96 pixels: (96 x 96).
    2. set the Resolution to: 72 pixels.
    3. set to Mode to: RGB.
    4. set the Contents to: White.

    NOTE: Image will tile ONLY IF image is square in size.

  1. Using your paint brush, draw lines on your new image.

  1. From your Photoshop menu choose:
    1. Select > All
    2. then choose: Filters > Simply > Pizza Slice Mirror >
      (No setting required.)


    Note: depending on the number of installed plugins and which ver. of Photoshop you are running, this plugin could be listed under: > Filters > Other >

  1. With the entire image still select, from your Photoshop menu choose: Filters > Stylize > Emboss >

    Setting should be:
    Angle: -30 degrees
    Height: 1 pixels
    Amount: 50%

  1. Now you are ready to add some color. Again, with the entire image selected from your Photoshop menu choose: Image > Adjust > Hue/Saturation >

    Experiment with setting to achieve your desired color.

    I choose the following color settings:
    Hue: 180
    Saturation: 60
    Lightness: - 50

    NOTE: Be sure that the 'Colorize' check box is marked.

  1. Save your Photoshop file, then export your pattern tile.

    Click on Tile for full page viewing.
